MAC Educational Outreachmac-edu

Monroeville Arts Council offers art demos and workshops to the public. These educational art opportunities are being offered throughout the year, in the spring and the fall. Noted artists and art educators provide lessons to persons interested in exploring many mediums and techniques.

Recently, nationally recognized artist and ESAL member, Karen Ferrick, presented a pastel demonstration and free workshop in the Program Room of Monroeville Public Library. The artist created a pastel drawing and then guided the participants in recreating the drawing on their own. Techniques such as blending and glazing were demonstrated.

Other local artists who have presented at the Educational Outreach workshops include:

Tom Niggel – Learn to Draw
Pam Price – Exploring Watercolor
Bob Bickers – Acrylic Art

At these events, interested persons, ages 15 and up, may attend; no prior experience is necessary. All materials will be provided. Space is limited.
Interested persons may call 412-373-0277 to request further information or find out ways to support future art opportunities.

Kids’ Art in the Parkkids-art-in-the-park

A Kids’ Art in the Park is held annually at a local park in the Monroeville area. These events are free and open to children ages 6 through 12. This popular offering is provided with sponsorship by UPMC East and Pat Catan’s. Publicity is given by Monroeville Recreation and Parks.

Volunteers provide a series of creative activities geared to interest and engage the children throughout the day.

Sunrise School Outreachsunrise-school-outreach

With the financial support of UPMC East, Monroeville Arts Council presented “Passport to Rhythm” through Gateway to the Arts for the children at Sunrise School in Monroeville. A trio of musicians used an assortment of drums to entertain the audience with various sounds and rhythms as a means to transport the children to Latin American and African nations. The children were encouraged to clap during the drum tours and were delighted they had a chance to play the drums themselves.

Other groups or individuals that entertained the children include:

Cello Fury and nationally known mime Dan Kamin.

Gateway to the Arts, a part of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, provides support for these educational and cultural events.
